IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON ORPHANS

Covid-19 has had a devastating impact on our world however some young children have been left to face this pandemic by themselves. According to research, in India, more than a million children have lost at least one of their parents as a result to this deadly virus, taking away crucial support while subjecting children to hardships and poverty.

India has seen an increase in the number of children that have been sent to orphanages due to the loss of their parents or lack of financial support. Delhi orphanages say that they are well-stocked for the time being however there has been a fall in the donations which proves to be a big concern. This is because the lockdown has halted the regular donors, making it challenging for the orphanages to arrange essential items for the children.

In a conversation with The Indian Express, Anjina Rajagopal, the Executive Director at the SaiKripa orphanage said, “The funds have gone down drastically, and people don’t visit as often as they used to. So, naturally, we have to think and see how long these things will continue.”

There have been several Covid-19 Orphanage Workers Relief projects and fundraisers which have been started in order to provide the orphanages in Delhi with the financial support they require while some organisations and individuals have been working on giving orphan’s new lives at care homes.

Additionally, Smriti Irani who is the minister for women and child welfare had tweeted that between April 1 and May 25, the Covid-19 pandemic has taken the lives of both the parents of at least 577 children in India. Further studies show that this figure is most likely an underestimation and India has seen a lot more such deaths in this duration.
